What are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are a kind of dermal filler used specifically to inject in and around the mouth. These are usually made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found naturally in our bodies.

Hyaluronic acid has the ability to absorb water and volumise the injected area. Fillers can also be injected to create shape and structure.

Effects usually last 6 months, after which they are slowly and naturally re-absorbed by the bod

The shape of our lips have a great impact on the overall appearance of our face. Lips can dramatically change how we look.

In fact, loss of lip volume is one of the key signs of ageing, but is often neglected in rejuvenation.

Lip fillers can be used to shape and define lips: by injecting along the vermillion borders and lip structure, as well as to volumise and plump the lip body.

Experienced injectors can use a variety of advanced lip injection techniques to create almost any look.

Getting Lip Fillers on Thin Lips

If you have naturally thin lips and would like to attain a full exotic look, this may be possible. But a responsible injector would recommend slowly reaching the desired results through a series of treatments, rather than injecting large volumes at once. A series of appointments would produce a longer lasting and more natural result.

How much do Lip Fillers cost?

In the UK lip fillers tend to cost between £200 – £1,500 depending on location, amount, and expertise.

Many clinics charge by price per syringe, with syringes volumes starting at 0.5ml.

Will lip fillers suit me?

The best way to determine if lip fillers are suitable for you, is with a face-to-face consultation.

How long does a lip filler treatment take?

If you have already had a consultation with your practitioner, then a brief repeated consultation should only take 10 – 15 minutes.

Numbing cream is then typically applied and left for half an hour to take effect.

The procedure itself often only takes about 15 minutes.

What to expect during and after Lip Fillers

During the treatment, there is usually some discomfort. You may have some local anaesthetic cream applied to your lips to help make the procedure more comfortable. Some practitioners use dental blocks to numb the entire area, though this is now less popular.

The lip filler itself often contains a local aesthetic called Lidocaine, so discomfort usually reduces as the procedure continues.

Immediately after the treatment, there may be some swelling and bruising. Most swelling tends to occur the day after receiving the treatment.

Swelling should settle within a couple of days, and bruises should disappear within 2 weeks.

Follow-up appointments are important. Any side effects or bruising should be reviewed at these appointments, usually 2 weeks after treatment.

Post-Treatment: Lip FIller Aftercare

Your practitioner will advise you on specific things to watch out for after the treatment. But as a general guide, the following is advised after receiving anti-ageing injections:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area.
  • Avoid applying make-up to treated area for 4 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 6 hours after treatment
  • Do not drink alcohol for 6 hours after treatment
  • Avoid lying down for 4 hours after treatment
  • Do not take any long haul flights for 24 hours

Note: If you have an concerns about your treatment, please contact your practitioner. If you’re concerned about a serious reaction, or have any breathing difficulty, seek medical help right away.

How to choose the right practitioner:

Practitioners have different styles and techniques of injecting lips. Different techniques lend themselves to different “looks”.

This is particularly important when it comes to lips, as different techniques suit different lips. Some injection techniques volumise the lip body evenly, while others disperse products in micro-droplets across the lip.

Some injection techniques are able to shape and lift the cupids bow, and others provide more lip definition.

  1. Compare before and after pictures: make sure you look for ones where the “before” image matches your lips.
  2. Consult with each practitioner face-to-face and show them pictures of your desired outcome.
  3. Ask in detail how they would plan to inject to achieve your desired results.
  4.  Discuss realistic expectations and/or suitability of other treatments.

Lip Fillers, Lip Injections, Lip Augmentation and Lip Enhancement:

Do they all mean the same thing?

Yes, when researching on the internet, the different terminology used by clinics can get confusing. Sometimes “Lip Fillers” are used to refer to the substance injected, while “Lip Augmentation”, “Lip Enhancement” and even “Lip Job” refer specifically to the procedure or treatment. Ultimately, they are all different ways to describe the same treatment.

Will my lips look very different?

Lip filler treatments can be as obvious or subtle as you want. The more volume is injected the more drastic the result.

If it is a big change you’re after, a good practitioner will recommend working up towards the desired size and effect in steps.

Are Lip Fillers Safe?

When administered correctly, by a trained and experienced practitioner, lip fillers can be very safe. In addition, lip fillers can be reversed by injecting hyaluronidase to dissolve areas of unwanted filler. Unlike Botulinum Toxin, which cannot be actively reversed, and instead must be left to wear off naturally.

Possible Lip Filler Side Effects: What can go wrong?

The most common side effect to expect is some swelling and bruising. It is also common to bleed temporarily from injection sites. More serious side effects may include:

  • Infection
  • Severe or prolonged bruising where a larger blood vessel has been injured,
  • Asymmetry or irregularity of the lips
  • Injection of filler into a blood vessel, causing occlusion and tissue loss
  • Ulceration and scarring
  • Allergic reaction

Cheap Lip Fillers

When it comes to health and medical cosmetics, shopping treatments for the cheapest price can be dangerous. Cheap lip fillers are no exception. In 2018, 72% of all dermal filler related complaints were regarding lip fillers.

Important questions to ask when considering cheap lip fillers include:

Why are they so cheap compared to other clinics?

Are they taking shortcuts in the safe treatment process that allow them to undercut their competition? Compare all aspects of the treatment you will receive.

Will there be aftercare or a follow-up appointment?

Some clinics do not routinely book follow-up appointments.

Some may offer reviews only when something goes wrong. This is one way to save on clinic time and appointment cost.

What lip filler product is used? Is it an approved lip filler brand?

Always ask about the specific product that will be used. Check that the brand is reputable and approved for use in the UK. Not all lip filler products are equal. Unlicensed cheap fillers sometimes illegally make their way into the UK. These are associated with dangerous side-effects and are responsible for a number of hospitalisations.

There have been concerning reports of practitioners using the same packet of lip filler product on different clients. These are attempts to save opening new packs or wasting unused filler. This is a highly dangerous practice, violating all guidelines.

Is the clinic or practitioner insured?

Malpractice insurance can be very expensive, ranging from £500 per year to several tens of thousands. These costs are usually incorporated into each treatment cost, and avoiding insurance fees may be a dangerous way to keep treatments cheap.

Who can perform lip filler treatments?

Registered doctors, dentists, nurses, and pharmacists are currently licensed to administer lip fillers. Always ask who will be performing your procedure. Do not be afraid to clarify qualifications. A registered clinic or practitioner will never be offended.

Who will be performing the treatment?

Unqualified injectors will have far fewer costs than registered and licensed practitioners. Unregistered practitioners nearly always offer the cheapest lip-filler treatments. Aesthetic Advisor only lists clinics with fully qualified and registered practitioners. We urge strongly against receiving treatments by beauticians, hairdressers, and other unqualified injectors.
